'Musika' Prints.
Date
2024-2025
Description
Cyanotypes on Cartridge paper.
In the local Shona language, 'Musika' refers to the marketplace. These cyanotypes are representation of the maize plant. Maize is the staple food in Zimbabwe, though it is not indigenous. It was introduced by colonial rulers as a crop that could be mass-produced, and as a result, it is now predominantly grown in the country.
Over the past two years, Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries have been experiencing droughts caused by El Niño—a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This drought has led to significant crop failures, leaving 1.6 million Zimbabweans facing food insecurity, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
