Perambulator

Year

2023

Description

Perambulator, Rusty Pram frame, Zimbabwean dollar notes stitched lace.

Perambulator is the repurposing of my childhood pram and the devalued Zimbabwean dollar note. In this piece I am exploring themes of life, death and transformation. It was made after spending a few years away from my home and returning to find that things were not the same. I found the pram rusting in the garden and the notes were found stuffed in drawers and on the ground in parks. The work speaks of a longing and a yearning for a time when life was better, but the viewer is confronted with the uncomfortable truth of something that’s a miss. The work is a political statement of the failings of a government unable to care for its children but of hope that something could be salvaged and transformed.
Even though this piece was made in 2010, it is still relevant not only to Zimbabwe- which has re-introduced its currency at least twice and had it devalue again- but also relevant to the present experience of high inflation globally.
